民国初年，天下局势动荡不安。少年卫斯理（吴奇隆 饰）是一个年轻而富有冒险精神的孤儿，在师父沐天恩（杜弘君 饰）的养育下长大成人，追随使命保护着清朝的皇家古墓。因为古墓密室发现的一座石棺而引起多方势力的明争暗抢，而棺中身穿金缕玉衣的妙龄少女更成了众人疑惑的不解之谜。卫斯理因这古棺的原因结识了白老大的女儿白素（阳光 饰），更是惊奇的发现，原来石棺内的女子是白素的母亲，石棺正是穿梭时空的飞行器。伴随着一次又一次惊奇冒险的生死考验下，卫斯理和白素渐生感情，而卫斯理更是在白素和白奇伟（于波 饰）兄妹的帮助下，发现了越来越多超自然的现象，而这些事情好像与卫斯理的身世之谜都有着紧密的联系。 该片改编自倪匡的同名科幻系列小说。
