宁城公安大学即将毕业的古岱刚到刑警队实习，就被卷入一场以“游戏”为名的系列作家绑架案——八名悬疑小说家一夜之间被绑销声匿迹。古岱以为自己推理出幕后主办者时，所有线索却都抛向他，他成为这起绑架案的第一嫌疑人。经过缜密的侦查，刑警大队副大队长王梓越发觉得这起绑架事件另有隐情。随着案件的深入，警方和作为游戏参赛者的古岱也逐渐有了头绪，零散的线索渐渐清晰，同为被绑八名作家中一员的真正绑架案元凶浮出水面。此案因古岱而起，也因古岱而终。古岱凭借自己层层推理，配合警方迅速破案。过程中，他也成长为一名合格的人民警察。 该剧根据宁航一长篇小说《必须犯规的游戏》改编。
