在城里长大的牛劲，大学毕业后不认同谨小慎微的父亲对自己循规蹈矩的人生安排，为了爱情回到家乡创业，父子关系一度决裂。但是由于牛劲的好高骛远，导致创业、初恋双双失败。关键时刻父亲牛大山变卖了棒棒公司，抵押了城里的房产和儿子一起扛下了债务。百般无奈下，牛劲跟着父亲一起回到城里当上了棒棒，偿还债务，并在这个过程中明白了父辈们靠着勤劳坚韧打拼幸福的棒棒精神，认识到了农民工作为城市过客的生活状态，他开始思考农村人的出路到底在哪里。最终，牛劲在火锅店老板娘余安安的帮助下走出了人生的低谷，再次回到了家乡铁山村，并一步步重拾乡亲的信任，带领着乡亲走上了共同致富的道路，也收获了自己的友谊和爱情。
