上世纪70年代，因哑巴的缺陷而一直打光棍的佟林在家门口捡到一个女婴，虽不能言语但天性善良的他收养了女婴，并给女婴起名“阿美”。因为阿美，佟林受下乡返城没有工作着落的妹妹佟燕的挤兑，将工作和房子都让了出去，自己则带着阿美外出租房，并以收破烂为生，靠着微薄的收入独自抚养阿美。父女俩每天最欢乐的时光，是佟林为阿美弹奏那些收来的旧乐器，阿美每每都兴奋地手舞足蹈，这也是佟林最开心的时刻。中考时，老师劝说阿美报考音乐附中，但是因高额的学费，阿美不忍再给父亲增加负担而拒绝了老师；佟林得知后，一心为了阿美的前途考虑，替阿美做主报了名，自己则又偷偷地多打了几份工。当阿美学有成就时，佟林却因为成年累月的劳作而罹患了癌症，阿美怀着深深的感恩之情为父亲佟林唱起了《酒干倘卖无》。
